Fred has revealed that his teammate Bruno Fernandes inspired his brilliant performance in the Europa League against Club Brugge by telling him to emulate Manchester United legend Paul Scholes.
The Brazilian has been a crucial cog in the midfield as he offers defensive solidity with a calmness in possession to kick-start attacks.
One thing that has been lacking from Fred's game, however, is goals. His first strike for the club came not long after his arrival in a draw with Wolves but it would be 523 days until he found the back of the net again.
The 27-year-old scored a brace and even bagged an assist in the last-32 second leg tie against Brugge and he has revealed that it was Fernandes' advice that led to his stellar performance.
"Before the game against Brugge, in which I scored two goals, I hadn’t scored a goal this season. We were at the hotel there for lunch, just before the game," Fred told Esporte Interativo.
